Obedience Unlocks God’s Provision
Key scripture.
Hebrews 11:3
"By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible."

Matthew 17:24–27; John 2:1–8; 1 Kings 17:12-15

1. The Challenge
Temple Tax (Matt. 17:24): “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?”

Matthew 17:24
When they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?”

Wedding at Cana (John 2:3): “They have no wine.”

John 2:2-3
" Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”

Widow at Zarephath (1 Kings 17:12): “I do not have bread, only a handful of flour… that we may eat it, and die.”

PRAYER POINT.
Every challenge is an opportunity for God’s faithfulness to be revealed.

2. The Response.
Temple Tax (Matt. 17:25–26): Jesus showed Peter that sons are free.

Matthew 17:25-26
" He said, “Yes.”
And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?”
Peter said to Him, “From strangers.”
Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free."

Wedding at Cana (John 2:5): Mary said, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

John 2:5
" His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

Widow at Zarephath (1 Kings 17:12 & 13): Elijah said, “Do not fear.”

1 Kings 17:12
" So she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

1 Kings 17:13
" And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son."

PRAYER POINT:
Our response must move from fear to faith, and from doubt to trust in God’s promises.

3. The Instruction.
Temple Tax (Matt. 17:27): “Go to the sea… you will find a coin.”

Matthew 17:27
" Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.”

Wedding at Cana (John 2:7–8): “Fill the waterpots… draw some out now.”

Matthew 17:27
" Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.”"

Widow at Zarephath (1 Kings 17:13–14): “Make me a small cake first… the flour and oil will not run dry.”

1 Kings 17:13-14
" And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. For thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth.’ ”

PRAYER POINT:
Pray for obedience to instructions. Even when the instruction seems strange or costly — is the gateway to supernatural provision.

Conclusion: God’s Provision Pattern
1. The Challenge – Needs will come (tax, wine, food). (John 16:33, Isaiah 41:10)
2. The Response – Faith must replace fear. (Romans 4:20–21, Mark 9:23)
3. The Instruction – Obedience to God’s word unlocks provision. (Joshua 1:8, Luke 11:28)

👉 The Principle: God’s miracles follow this order: Challenge → Response → Instruction → Provision.
