Power Thursday – Seed for the Lord
John 12:23–26 (NIV)
23 Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.”
Dying to Self to Produce Fruit for God
In this powerful passage, Jesus speaks first about Himself, but He is also revealing a deep Kingdom principle:
When a life is laid down for God, it is never wasted—it is multiplied for His glory.
Just as a seed must fall to the ground and die to produce many seeds, we too must die to ourselves—to our selfish desires, comfort, and personal ambition—so that we can truly live and bear fruit in the Kingdom of God.
In the natural world, a seed that is buried in the soil absorbs nutrients and water, sprouts, grows into a plant, and produces fruit containing many more seeds. Spiritually, we are the seed—and God calls us to surrender our lives so that His life may flourish in and through us.
When we sacrifice our time, resources, relationships, and even personal dreams for the sake of Christ, we are being “planted” in Him. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, that death to self produces a harvest of good works, righteousness, and eternal impact.
A Kingdom Principle That Defies the World
Jesus continues in verse 25:
“Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”
This teaching runs opposite to the values of the world. In society, we are taught to pursue and preserve our lives at all costs. But in God's Kingdom, we gain true life by surrendering it.
To "hate" our life in this world doesn't mean to despise it, but to value eternal things more than temporary pleasures. It means choosing God’s will over personal comfort, holiness over popularity, and obedience over self-centeredness.
Matthew 6:33 (NIV)
“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Serving Christ Brings Honor from the Father
“Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.
My Father will honor the one who serves me.” – John 12:26
To serve Jesus is to follow Jesus—even to the cross. It means being willing to go wherever He leads, no matter the cost. Yet, the reward is great: God the Father promises to honor those who serve His Son.
We don’t serve for recognition, but out of love and obedience. And when we serve from the heart, the Lord multiplies our impact—just like the seed that dies and bears many more.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to see the spiritual truth that I am a seed, called to be planted in surrender to Your will. Teach me to die to myself daily, to obey Your Word, and to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.
May I not hold on to my life, but lay it down for Your purposes—so that You may multiply it for Your glory.
Let the fruit of my surrender produce a harvest—30, 60, even 100-fold—in this generation.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Supporting Scriptures for Reflection:
“So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another—to Him who was raised from the dead—in order that we might bear fruit for God.”
“Through Him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name.
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”
“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”
“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
Final Thought:
You are not called to live a comfortable life—
You are called to sow your life.
You are a seed.
If you die to yourself, you will live unto Christ.
And if you live unto Christ, you will bear fruit for eternity.
