RIGHT BUT NOT LOYAL
King Amaziah of Judah did some things that were right in the eyes of the Lord, and others that were wrong. This pattern in Amaziah’s life seems to reflect much of our own journey with God—moments of obedience mixed with shortcomings. Even great patriarchs like King David were not without fault in their walk with God. Yet, in II Kings 14:3, David’s loyalty to the Lord was still used as the benchmark for evaluating Amaziah’s reign. This reminds us that God looks not only at isolated actions but at the overall direction of our hearts toward Him.
1. The relationship God wants from us is a loyal one and not just ticking the boxes selectively.
II Chronicles 25:2 - And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a loyal heart.
2. Embracing God's Word in totality is loyalty to God.
John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
3. How much does God seek loyalty to Him?
Joshua 1:8 - This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
4. Loyalty to God is not the absence of our weaknesses but the presence of the right responses to our weaknesses - the overall direction of our hearts toward Him.
II Samuel 12:13 - So David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die".
Psalms 51:17 - The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.
Psalms 119:11,105-106 - Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. I have sworn and confirmed that I will keep Your righteous judgments.
5. In the light of "The Gideon Strategy."
James 5:16 (NKJV) - Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
James 5:16 (AMPC) - Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offences, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and heart]. The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].
"One torch doesn’t light much, but thirty torches spread across homes, workplaces, and neighbourhoods will set fires of prayer we cannot contain." (The Gideon Strategy).
