Walking with God with Conviction Part 1
– Through the Lens of Judges 6 & 7
> “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel… Have I not sent you?”
— Judges 6:14
> “The LORD said to Gideon, ‘The people with you are too many… lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me.’”
— Judges 7:2
What is Conviction?
Conviction is a deeply held persuasion that governs your choices and behaviour, rooted in divine revelation rather than public opinioN.
🌳 1. When Conviction Must Be Born in Crisis
The story of Gideon unfolds in one of Israel’s darkest seasons— oppressed by the Midianites, stripped of resources, and hiding in fear. It was in that cave of fear that God called a man of conviction.
Gideon’s story reminds us that conviction is not formed in comfort but forged in contradiction. God often births conviction where human courage has collapsed.
> Before God raises deliverers publicly, He first rebuilds conviction privately.
Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress—trying to preserve small results in a place designed for crushing. Many believers today are doing the same—trying to protect what’s left, not realizing God is calling them to restore what was lost.
🌳 2. Divine Encounter: Conviction Begins with Revelation (Judges 6:11–14)
Gideon’s walk with conviction began the moment heaven interrupted his insecurity.
“The angel of the LORD appeared to him and said, ‘The LORD is with you, mighty man of valour.’”
Key Points :
- Conviction begins when God’s definition overrides man’s perception.
- God addressed Gideon according to his divine identity, not his current behaviour.
- Revelation realigns perception—before Gideon could fight outward battles, he had to overcome inward unbelief.
> You cannot walk in conviction while still negotiating your identity.
Reflection :
What has God called you that your circumstances try to contradict?
🌳 3. Inner Wrestling: Conviction Must Overcome Excuses (Judges 6:15–18)
Gideon’s response reveals the common barriers to conviction:
- “My clan is the weakest.” ( Inferiority )
- “I am the least.” ( Insecurity )
- “If the LORD is with us, why…?” ( Doubt )
Insight :
Conviction does not deny human weakness—it decides to believe divine sufficiency despite it.
> Conviction is the courage to move even when clarity isn’t complete.
Reflection :
List the “weakest” areas in your life where God might be calling you to act. What truth counteracts each excuse?
🌳 4. Private Altars Before Public Victories (Judges 6:25–27)
Before Gideon could lead a nation, he had to first tear down his father’s altar to Baal.
“Take your father’s bull… and tear down the altar of Baal that your father has.”
> Conviction begins at the altar—where compromise is confronted. You cannot walk with God publicly while serving idols privately.
Application :
Conviction is proven in what you destroy in secret before what you conquer in public.
Reflection :
What “altars” of compromise must be torn down in your own life—habits, approval, fear, hidden idols?
🌳 5. Calling Tested: Conviction Must Be Refined by Confirmation (Judges 6:36–40)
Gideon asked for signs with the fleece—not out of disbelief, but in pursuit of certainty. God graciously confirmed his assignment twice.
Insight :
Conviction is not rash. It seeks divine confirmation before action.
But once confirmed, conviction no longer negotiates.
Lesson :
God doesn’t despise our need for assurance; He strengthens conviction by revelation, not superstition.
