Title: Serving God’s Purpose in Your Generation
Text: Acts 13:36; Hebrews 11
“For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption.” — Acts 13:36 (KJV)
“And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets…” — Hebrews 11:32 (NKJV)
God has a purpose and plan for our lives in this generation
- Psalm 139:16 – “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”
God’s purpose for your life is not random—it’s written, it’s intentional, and it’s part of something eternal.
David’s example: how to serve God’s purpose (Every season and stage counts)
· The Shephard Boy- Before he ruled a kingdom, he cared for sheep (1 Samuel 17:34–36).
· The sweet psalmist of Israel - Thus says the man raised up on high, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel (2 Sam 23:1)
· The skilful leader “So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.”(Psalm 78:72)
The heart of David’s service was his Heart After God
- Psalms 139:23 -“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
- Psalms 23:3- “He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name.”
- Psalms 86:11- “Teach me Your way, O LORD, that I may walk in Your truth. Give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name.
Lesson:
Your private obedience prepares you for public purpose.
Men and Women of faith who served God’s purpose for their generation (Hebrews 11)
- Abraham obeyed by faith and became a blessing to nations.
- Moses chose purpose over pleasure, identifying with God’s people.
- Rahab, Gideon, Samuel, and the prophets—all played their part in their generation’s story.
“They all died in faith, not having received the promises…” — Hebrews 11:13
- Prayer:
Each generation receives a baton of purpose. Dear God give us the grace to run our leg faithfully before passing it on to the next generation. Lord, let my life count for Your kingdom. Help me serve Your purpose in my generation the best way I possibly could.”
Conclusion:
- David’s story teaches us: a life lived in God’s purpose leaves a legacy that outlives the person.
- When our time is done, may heaven say of us: “He served God’s purpose in their generation.”
· Serving our generation means living beyond ourself—impacting others through our God-given gifts.
