After the age of 4 he was give to Eli the priest to serve in the tabernacle.

God spoke to him at a very  young age giving him a message to Eli regarding the judgment.

Significance lessons from David Life

1. Samuel prophesied about the appointment of David. 1 Samuel 13:13

And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

2. Samuel anointed David as King. 1 Samuel 16:13

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

Reflection:

Who prophetically speaks into your life? Who identifies, cultivates and brings out God’s purposes in your life.

  SAUL- THE KING & ADVERSARY.

Son of Kish Benjamite from a well to do family 1 Sam 9:1

Tall, dark and handsome in appearance 1 Sam 9:2

He was Gods chosen one to lead the scattered nation of Israel a collection of tribes that did not have a central government.

His reign started in 1010 BC but there was no peace found during his time in office.

A competent military leader who lead them to many victories including Jabesh Giliead.

Unfortunately he committed several blunders that caused his down fall and being rejected by God.

Saul's relationship to David.

David was a skilled musician who was called to play the harp when the evil spirits tormented Saul.

Saul loved him greatly and made him his armour bearer.

Saul loved and took David as his own son after the Victory over Goliath.

The relationships suddenly changed when people sang praises to David .....Saul has killed 1000 and David 10000. " And Saul eyed David differently since that a day forward" 1 Sam 18:7-9

When Saul realised that God was with David he sought to kill him and spent his resources, time and position pursuing David.

 lessons learnt from King Saul.

1. Obey God and seek to follow his will over your life.

1 Samuel 15:22 " Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

2. Not to misuse power.  Saul abused power.  Pride and arrogance overtook his heart.

3. Lead as God would wants us to lead  1 Peter 5:2-10

Reflection:

1. Saul was appointed and anointed by God but he fail to lead himself and the people of Israel which resulted disaster.

2. Saul had a significant people pleasing mindset which lead to his downfall.

3. Never fight for the what yours - David honoured King Saul to his death.

4. Sometime the people who open doors for you can become the people you have to contend… Keep moving!

JONATHAN- THE FRIEND & CONFIDANT.

Jonathan was the son of King Saul.

A notable man of true character, faith and intergrity.

The brother inlaw to David after he married Michal.

A skilled and brave warrior who had strong faith in God. 1 Samuel 14:1

The qualities of a good friendship.

1 Samuel 18:3-4

And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.

The significance of the covenant:

ROBE - position and power. Jonathan transferred his position and power to David showing SACRIFICE.

TUNIC- personal inner clothing. Shared with David is most personal and intimate. INTIMACY/ OPENNESS.

SWORD- his protection and weapon of war. Jonathan was indicating that he would not be fighting David. PROTECTION.

4. David kept the COVENANT. 2 Samuel 9:1 David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

Reflection:

Who is your Jonathan? Who is your friend? Do you have covenant friendship? This is a big challenge to us men as we get older and life happens.

  JOAB - THE COMRADE.

The son of Zeruiah King David's sister ( David nephew) 1 chronicles 2 :13-17

Commander of David's armies after the victory in Jebusite which resulted in the possession of the City of Jerusalem. 1 chronicle 11:4-9

A skilled warrior, a capable man of war and valiant in the battlefield.

A great commander in the battlefield and a fierce fighter but his lack of self control was a big problem;

Killed Abner against King David's will.

Killed Absolom King David's son after he was told not to kill him.

His power and position drove him to make the wrong choice.

He was involved in the planning and eventual death of Uriah by placing him on the frontline at the battlefield.

Joab  was very loyal to David as long as it served his purposes and position.

Joab counselled David against his decision to conduct a census.

Finally he conspired with Adonijah( David’s son) to install him as King against King David will. This lead to downfall.

He lived by the sword and finally died by the sword.

 Lesson we learn from Joab.

1. Skill without character will fail you at the end. Joab was skilled but lacked character and self control.

2. Joab was vengeful and devious. The killed Abner and Amasa when he had come in peace.

3. Joab negative influence to David. He was used by David to do the dirty work for David. Killing Uriah and because of this things David could not control him.

4. Joab was loyal just as long as it served his interest and position.

5. Before his death David ordered the death of Joab for the sins he had committed.   1 kings 2:5-6

Reflection:

Comrades are like scaffolding they only hangs around because we share the same goal. Once the building is up- they are gone.

Identify the comrades in your life- people you run with based on same goal.

Watch out on people that have negative influence around you life.

3. Played the role of a prophet and priest in the life of David and his family.
