Understanding True Submission

True submission to God is an all-encompassing surrender of one's will, desires, and actions to align completely with God's purpose. It goes beyond mere obedience or compliance; it involves a deep, heartfelt commitment to trust and follow God in every aspect of life.

True submission is characterised by humility, faith, and a willingness to sacrifice personal ambitions for the sake of divine purpose.

Scriptural Foundations
1. Romans 12:1-2: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

2. James 4:7: "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

3. Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

4. Luke 22:42: "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Jesus in Gethsemane)

5. Matthew 6:10: "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." (The Lord's Prayer)

Aspects of Submission Often Overlooked

1. Acceptance of God's Timing
- Submission to God includes accepting His timing, which often means waiting patiently for His plans to unfold. This can be particularly challenging in a world that values instant gratification.

Abraham and Sarah's story in Genesis 17-21 illustrates the struggle and reward of waiting on God's timing for the promise of Isaac.

2. Embracing Uncertainty
- True submission involves embracing uncertainty and trusting God even when the future is unclear.

Hebrews 11:8 highlights Abraham's journey: "By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."

3. Letting Go of Control
- Many people find it difficult to relinquish control over their lives. Submission to God means acknowledging that He is sovereign and His plans are superior.

Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps."

4. Wholehearted Trust in God's Character
- Submission requires a deep trust in God's character, knowing that He is good, loving, and faithful.

This trust is demonstrated in Psalm 23, where David expresses confidence in God's guidance and provision.

Real-Life Stories of Submission
1. George Müller
George Müller, a Christian evangelist and director of the Ashley Down orphanage in Bristol, England, is renowned for his unwavering faith and submission to God's will. Müller never solicited funds, relying entirely on prayer to meet the needs of the orphanage. His life story exemplifies a profound trust in God's provision and timing.

2. Corrie ten Boom
Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch Christian who helped many Jews escape the Holocaust, displayed true submission through her courage and forgiveness. After being imprisoned in a concentration camp, she continued to trust in God's plan and later spoke widely about the power of forgiveness, embodying Christ's teachings.

3. Jim Elliot
Jim Elliot, a missionary to Ecuador, demonstrated ultimate submission by sacrificing his life to reach the unreached. His famous quote, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose," reflects his total surrender to God's will, even unto death.

Practical Steps to True Submission
1. Daily Prayer and Meditation
Regular prayer and meditation on God’s Word help align our hearts with His will. By seeking God daily, we cultivate a relationship that fosters trust and obedience.

2. Community and Accountability
Surrounding ourselves with fellow believers who can encourage and hold us accountable is crucial.

Hebrews 10:24-25 emphasises the importance of community in strengthening our faith and commitment.

3. Service and Sacrifice
Engaging in acts of service and sacrifice helps us put others' needs above our own, mirroring Christ's humility.

Philippians 2:3-4 urges us to "do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking tofulfillmentnterests but each of you to the interests of the others."

4. Continuous Learning and Growth
Submitting to God involves a lifelong journey of learning and growth. Studying the Bible, reading spiritual literature, and attending teachings help deepen our understanding of God's will.

Conclusion

True submission to God is a profound and ongoing process that requires humility, faith, and a willingness to let go of our own desires. By embracing God's timing, accepting uncertainty, relinquishing control, and trusting in His character, we align ourselves with His perfect will. The stories of faithful individuals like George Müller, Corrie ten Boom, and Jim Elliot inspire us to pursue a deeper relationship with God, marked by unwavering trust and obedience. As we strive to submit fully to God, we experience the peace and fulfillment that come from living according to His divine purpose.

Prayer Points:

For those who want to rest in God and cease from toiling, let us learn to surrender.

Reflect on the poem below.

IN THE HANDS OF GRACE: A POEM OF SURRENDER

In fields of grace where sunlight glows,
The seeds of faith in silence grow.
A heart that yields to heaven's breeze,
Finds peace in life’s complexities.

In shadows deep where doubts reside,
A whisper calls from love's own tide.
"Be still," it speaks, "and trust the light,
For dawn will break the darkest night."

The waves may crash, the storms may roar,
Yet in surrender , fear's no more.
For hands unseen do guide the way,
Through every night, to each new day.

The path of life, a winding road,
With burdens heavy, countless loads.
Yet every step, though steep or wide,
Is watched with care by Love’s own guide.

Let go the chains of earthly strife,
Release the grip on fleeting life.
For in the act of letting go,
The soul ascends, the spirit grows.

The ego fades like morning mist,
When held within the Maker's kiss.
In humble trust , the heart does bend,
To find in God a faithful friend.

The flowers bloom by His command,
The stars, they dance by His own hand.
And we, like petals in the breeze,
Find purpose in divine decrees.

So bow your head, embrace His will ,
In quietude, your heart be still.
For in surrender , we are free,

To live , to love , eternally .🙏🏾
