HOW ARE YOU BUILDING? - 1 Kings 15:9-24; 2 Chronicles 14

Anchor Text for the Year: “But the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.” - Daniel 11:32b

"As man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7

- The King of the kingdom.
Matthew 6:9-10
"In this manner, therefore, pray: our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. 10  Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

- We have been made kings and priests.
Revelation 1:4-6
"John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.”

- Kingdom and kingly mindset
Mindset is crucial.
Romans 12:1-2
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Asa was the great grandson of king Solomon

1. Commitment to Righteousness (1 Kings 15:11-13)

* Verse 11: Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his ancestor David had done.
* Verse 12: He expelled the male shrine prostitutes from the land and got rid of all the idols his ancestors had made.
* Verse 13: He even deposed his grandmother Maacah from her position as queen mother because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah. Asa cut down and burned the image.

"Those who know their God….” Daniel 11:32b

> Right standing with God provides you the grace and opportunity to know God as your King.

Pray Unless the Lord builds the house, they labour in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain (Psalm 127). Lord help me build according to pattern. Grant me the wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Christ to understand my blueprint.

2. Building a Strong Kingdom (1 Kings 15:16-22)

* Verses 16-17: There was war between AsBaasha king of Israel throughout their reigns. Baasha built Ramah Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
* Verses 18-19: Asa then took all the silver and gold left in the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of his own palace. He entrusted it to his officials and sent them to Ben-Hadad son of Tabrimmon, the son of Hezion, the king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus. Asa said, "Let there be a treaty between me and you."
* Verses 20-21: Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel, effectively halting Baasha’s aggression.

…shall be strong…

> Strength, wisdom, and growth are required to build agile kingdoms.

3. Enduring Commitment

Verse 23: Asa's reign was marked by reforms, wars, and rest and he was afflicted with a disease in his feet in his old age.
Verse 24: Asa died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David, and his son Jehoshaphat succeeded him as king.

Despite wars and opposition, Asa’s commitment to righteousness enabled him to strengthen the kingdom and territory God placed in his hands.

…and carry out great exploits.

- Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet in his old age. His kingdom progress and advancement was curtailed and truncated. Improvement slowed down to a stop.

Pray Father, I receive the spirit of endurance. As I have started well in you, help me to end well as I seek first Your kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33).
