Declining Religious Affiliation: The 2021 Census revealed a sharp decline in Christianity, with only 43.9% of Australians identifying as Christians, compared to 86.2% in 1971. Meanwhile, 38.9% of Australians reported having "no religion," a significant increase from 6.7% in 1971. While identification with non-Christian religions has grown, the broader trend indicates secularisation and declining church attendance.
Ephesians 3:10
“…to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places.”
Scripture Focus: Luke 1:26-34
"Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
How Can This Be?
Mary’s response, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” reflects a natural, logical reaction to the angel’s supernatural announcement. Her question is not one of disbelief but of wonder, born of human reasoning.
The angel’s reply unveils a divine principle: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you.” This underscores the supremacy of God’s Word and the Spirit’s role in bringing divine promises to fruition.
Key Lessons from Mary’s Response
1. Rational Inquiry Meets Divine Revelation
Mary’s initial question demonstrates that faith is not devoid of inquiry. God invites us to seek understanding as long as our questions lead to trust rather than doubt.
2. Faith in the Character of God
The angel concludes with a profound truth: “For with God, nothing will be impossible.” Mary’s ultimate response—“Let it be to me according to your word”—reveals her deep trust in the character of God. She acknowledges that His Word carries inherent power to accomplish what it declares.
3. Submission to the Supremacy of the Word
Mary’s surrender, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord,” exemplifies complete alignment with God’s will. She recognises the Word’s authority over every limitation and impossibility. Her faith bridges the gap between heaven’s decree and earthly manifestation.
Conclusion: Living Under the Supremacy of the Word
Mary’s story calls the church to a life of humility, preparedness, and faith. Her journey teaches the Body of Christ that divine favour equips, God’s presence sustains, and His Word empowers. When faced with seemingly impossible promises, may our response mirror Mary’s: “Let it be to me according to your word.”
This posture of faith not only honours the supremacy of the Word but also activates its transformative power in our lives, positioning the Church to fulfil God’s eternal purposes.
