Matthew 8:5-13
Three Key Attitude to Have towards the Word of God
1. Humility Before the Word - “…a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him…”
The centurion, a Roman officer of high rank and authority, exhibited profound humility by coming to Christ—a Jew in a nation under Roman rule—and pleading for His intervention. This act of submission underscores that the Word of God transcends social and political boundaries. The centurion had a heart posture of obedience - having a sincere desire to know the God of the Bible and to do His will.
Isaiah 66:2 - “For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,” says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word.”
2. Honour for the Word - “…saying, “Lord,…”
The centurion addressed Christ as “Lord,” an acknowledgment of His divine authority and sovereignty. True faith begins by esteeming the Word as worthy of reverence and ultimate trust. Blessed is the one...whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night" (Psalm 1:1–2). Study the Bible regularly and systematically, focusing on both the big picture and specific passages.
3. Boldness and Courage
By surrendering his servant's case entirely to Christ’s wisdom and will, the centurion demonstrated a faith that entrusts every need to the Word’s perfect power as sponsored and supervised by the Holy Spirit.
According Joshua 1:7,
a. Boldness however is required to act in faith concerning life's situation.
b. Courage is required to maintain the faith in the face of contrary evidence or while waiting for the manifestation of your expectation. Surrendering requires courage (Joshua 1:7).
This principle aligns with the actions of others in the Gospels, such as those who brought the paralytic to Christ. Yet, while their faith was commended as working faith, the centurion’s was praised as trusting faith.
Begin every study and meditation session by asking the Holy Spirit for insight, wisdom, and understanding. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things" (John 14:26).
