Spiritual Growth and the Supremacy of Christ
We stand at the threshold of another year's conclusion. As we near the end of another year, it’s natural to reflect on what we’ve accomplished, endured, or lost and hoped for.
1. Evaluating Our Spiritual Journey
We regularly measure progress in various areas of life—academic tests, job evaluations, and physical health checkups—but how often do we assess our spiritual growth?
Spiritual growth is an ongoing process of transformation. It is marked by a deepening relationship with Christ and the visible manifestation of the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 13:11 that as we grow in our faith, our behavior should reflect spiritual maturity. (1 Corinthians 13:11 ESV When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. )
While it’s natural to act like a spiritual infant early in our journey, we are called to strive for maturity, as urged in
Hebrews 6:1:
"Let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity..."
Let this be a time to measure your spiritual growth. Ask God to reveal areas in your life that need transformation and to help you never settle for anything less than a fully developed relationship with Him.
2. The Supremacy of Christ in Our Lives
As we evaluate our spiritual journey, we must focus on the supremacy of Christ. Colossians 1:15-20 declares Jesus as the Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer. Everything exists through Him and for Him.
Colossians 1:15-16 NLT
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, [16] for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can't see- such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.
Hebrews 1:3 beautifully illustrates that the same power that created and sustains the universe also cleanses us from sin.
Hebrews 1:3 NLT
The Son radiates God's own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.
Christ’s supremacy reminds us that our spiritual growth isn’t just about self-improvement; it’s about aligning our lives with His lordship. As we reflect on the past year, we should ask ourselves:
• Is Christ truly at the center of my life, or do other priorities compete for my attention?
* Am I growing in my understanding of Him and surrendering to His will?
* Are there areas where I resist His authority, and what must I surrender to Him?
Let’s commit to making Christ supreme in every aspect of our lives.
3. A New Year, A New Opportunity
As we step into a new year, it’s a chance to set spiritual goals and seek God’s guidance. 2 Peter 3:18 urges us to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” This growth requires intentional effort, ( e.g. prayer & study of God's Word) reflection, and submission to Christ’s lordship.
2 Peter 3:18 NIV
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
