Remember that when Joshua took over from Moses, his assignment was to conquer territories. Conquering territories is not a walk in the park. Israel had a weak mentality, they needed a mindset shift.
There were extraneous distractions from a mixed multitude, distractions from people who only saw Giants, forgetting they were giant Killers. May we be delivered from a grasshopper mentality.
In getting the people ready to conquer territories, their minds and heart needed circumcision. Joshua had to do this before they faced Jericho.
