Topic: The Power of Prophecy (Ezekiel 37)
PROPHECY IS SIMPLY A DECLARATION OF WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE
As humans, we operate at a level that is finite and have limited ability to comprehend spiritual matters. Just like when Jesus stated to Peter that “Flesh and Blood have not revealed this to you but by my Father in heaven” (Matthew 16:17).
Ezekiel found himself in a vision in a valley full of bones. Two things stood out here:
1. Valley: this signifies low points, season of despair, challenging times, period of despair, defeat or discouragement etc
2. Bones: signifies something that was in existence but is no more. It tells a story present pain emanating from past activities.
Ezekiel was instructed to do a thorough assessment of this situation, and he came to the following conclusions:
1. There were very many bones
2. The valley is open/exposed
3. The bones were very dry
This paints a picture of where men can find themselves at some points facing seemingly impossible situations. The inability to proffer a solution makes us look at ourselves and conclude that there is no hope – thereby the feeling of being a failure.
At this stage, the arm of flesh will fail – “for by strength shall no man prevail” – I Samuel 2:9
This is where total dependency on God is the only way through.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding,
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight
Ezekiel knew clearly that this situation is beyond his “Pay Grade” even as a prophet – he declared “O Lord God, Thou Knowest”. God told him what to do which is to prophesy.
1. God can use what he has already given you to bless you. God is very great at using what you already have, to initiate breakthroughs e.g. widow of Zarephat, Moses with the rod etc. In this case God used the gift of prophecy that is on Ezekiel to perform wonders.
2. Prophecy brings “Trouble” because the enemy will do all he can to avert that prophecy. This is where consistency and persistence play a key role to rely on God for instruction on every step to take. David still went through a lot before he became king, Joseph also.
3. One unique thing about Prohecy is that the Goal is always clear. Prophecy only tells you the end point but will not tell you the road you will need to take to get there. It helps us not to settle for less even when it looks like that less is comfortable. A good example is Joseph. Vs 4 & 5 clearly states that God will cause breath to enter the bones and live. However, Vs 8 stated that there was no breath even after sinews, flesh and skin has covered the bones. This tells us that as long as the word we received from God is not fully manifest yet, we need to keep speaking, declaring and keep doing what we have been called to do in God’s will until the result is the same thing with what we heard from God.
4. Everything / situation has ears and ca respond to the appropriate spoken word.
5. There are several prophecies we can hold on to from the word of God. It is however best to wait on God to know what exactly the word for that season should be. VS 9 talks about the specific instruction of prophesying to the wind and not the bones, sinews, flesh and skin.
